 Saratoga Springs is a longtime resort area in the north-south corridor between New York City and Montreal is best known for horse racing, its therapeutic baths and Yaddo, the famous artists and writers colony. If you are there in August during racing season, go to the racetrack to watch Thoroughbred horses run for the money amid restored, colonial splendor.  Saratoga Performing Arts Center, part of Saratoga Spa State Park, is the summer home away from home of the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The park also has two championship golf courses, two public swimming pools, the Hall of Springs restaurant and the historic Gideon Putnam Hotel.
But Saratoga Springs is still a place where you can get the full royal spa treatment. Crystal Spa, in the Grand Union Motel, offers plush velvet surroundings for baths and massage. And next door to the Museum of Dance, the Roosevelt Bathhouse retains its spartan decor and bubbling mineral-water tubs.
